The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family

“I know cell phones are dangerous but what can I do to convince my partner (or neighbor, or son, or daughter, or boss…) that they are dangerous.”

How many times have I heard this question?

A lot.

Today I have the answer.

Its in the form of a book, called…..

I discovered Dr. Davis back in 2010 on Youtube. As part of my research for an article I was writing I watched her testimonial in front of the 2009 Senate Hearing on cell phone radiation dangers . Feisty stuff.

Her book is a bombshell. So much so that when it came out (and still today) most of the book chains across the US refused to stock it.

My Review of Disconnect

Dr. Davis presents an array of recent and long suppressed research. She shows us the dark side of cell phones…

Safety standards? What standards? Applied by whom? The federal regulatory standards are set by the cell phone industry itself. Health experts have little or no say in policy-making decisions about cell phones.

Cell phone manufacturers have taken their lead from the tobacco industry. The public is being skillfully misled.

Cell phone radiation is a national emergency, she says.

She covers in detail the work of:

-Professor Om. P. Gandhi and his studies of brain absorption from radiofrequency radiation which show that uneven distribution of RF in the brain could result in much higher exposures in certain areas, thereby making the averaging exposures used by industry highly questionable.

She explains how cell phones:

– damage our DNA

– break down the brain's defenses,

– reduce sperm count

– increase memory loss,

– increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease, cancer…

As she most rightly says the most worrying is what it does to our children. Professor Gandhi in India found that children are more vulnerable than adults to cell phone radiation. The growing brains of children make them especially vulnerable. Radio-frequency radiation reaches much more deeply into children's thinner and smaller heads than ours. These studies were elaborated on by DeSalles in Brasil and Niels Kuster in Switzerland.

She recounts the story of Robert C.Kane, who worked for Motorola as a test engineer for cell phones for more than two decades, and subsequently developed brain cancer which he believed was tied with his exposures. It cost him his life.

There is also a practical side to this book. The appendix contains information on what steps you can take to protect yourself from cell phone radiation.

Other Reviews Of Disconnect

Davis makes a strong case in her book that we've underplayed the possible threat from cell phones for too long…Time and again, she shows the way that industry has been able to twist science just enough to stave off the possibility of any regulation.”—Time Magazine

Disconnect will surprise many and anger some. It tells all too human stories behind the science and engineering of cell phones and raises important unresolved questions about this universal technology.”—Frank A. Barnes, Professor, University of Colorado at Boulder, Member of the National Academy of Engineering

“A critically important book that is a must—read for parents and policy makers. A surprising, well—documented, and compelling call for action.”—Phil Lee, M.D., former United States assistant secretary for health, Chancellor Emeritus, University of California, San Francisco

“An amazing and important book that must be read to be believed. Are these devices safe for humans? The ‘don't ask, don't tell' approach of the industry is irresponsible at best, criminal at worst. Read and learn why and how to protect yourself and your loved ones.”—Mark Hyman, M.D., author of The UltraMind Solution, Chairman, The Institute for Functional Medicine

“A brilliant and courageous tour de force by one of our nation's leading environmental health experts. Davis provides a detailed exposé that forces us all to take a good, hard look at what we know and what we don't know about cell phones.” —Ronald B. Herberman, M.D., Founding Director Emeritus, University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute

“Devra Davis has written a book that will change the way the world thinks about cell phones and the potential public heath disaster they represent.”—Carlos Santos—Burgoa, M.D., M.P.H., Ph.D., Past President, International Society for Environmental Epidemiology

“This book will be a must—read for anyone who cares about our children's brains.”—David Servan-Schreiber, M.D., Ph.D., author of Anticancer

    Hi Tonia
Though I speak mainly about EMFs from man-made sources (cell phones, WiFi, dirty electricity etc) on this website, harmful EMFs are present in our environment from natural sources too – commonly called geopathic stress.
Your question is about the lake and how this may be affecting your health. I am not aware of any EMF issues regarding living near a large body of water…it is very possible that there is an interaction between the lake and nearby cell towers. However it may well be that it is moving water underneath your home which is causing the problem…the role of moving water (underground streams and rivers) in creating harmful EMFs is well known.
Underground water absorbs substances from its environment while making its way through tiny pores in rock & gravel. Charged particles (called ions) from metals such as iron can become dissolved in the underground water, EMF (electric fields) are created due to the movement of the ions in the water.
Possible solutions for you: contact a dowser (contact the national association for someone locally) or consult a kinesiologists.

Thanks, Lloyd, for directing me to the invaluable work of Devra Davis. Davis’ book reminds me of the work also of Mona Nilsson in Sweden. Nilsson points out in her book ”The Risks of Cellphones – facts about the biggest environment and health scandal of modern times” (I translate the title and quotes from Swedish)that, amongst other things
    (a) good research supported by the cellphone companies has been suppressed (page 278)
    (b) the research that has been carried out is ineffective because
    – it has been based in many instances on on the thermal effects of cellphone radiation (page 278)
    – usually research has not been carried out over a sufficiently long period of time (page 278, 289-281)
The research which has been done by the authorities (sponsored by the cellphone industry)is simply not good enough to show the effects of cellphone radiation – ”the Swedish government has not sponsored any research into the effects of cellphone masts proximity on health” (page 267 )
Finally, the real sting in the tail:
”Children are usually considered to be more sensitive than adults. But when it comes to cellphone usage, children in Sweden, in contrast to other children in the world, are not more sensitive than adults”!!! (page 267)
I hope I have translated and paraphrased correctly from the Swedish – unfortunately, as far as I know, Nilsson’s book has not yet been translated into English. It certainly deserves just as much recognition as does Davis’ groundbreaking book.

    Hi Sharon
I too am an admirer of Mona Nilsson’s work. Last year I wrote an article covering her book “Health Risks Of The Mobile Phone”, see – I’m guessing it’s the same book you are referring to. Thank you so much for your summary here -excellent. What a pity this book has not been translated into English it does seem to have slipped under the “radar”…

    Hello Lloyd,
It is extremely difficult to convince cell phone users that these devices are a health destroying instrument- even when I show them the data. They are very literally addicted to the chemicals released into the brain by these pulsed frequencies, and do not understand nor care about the long-term health implications.

I’ve researched approximately 100,000 pages of data on the EMF subject, and am well aware of many facets of the overall EMF issue. I have concluded that cell phones themselves are only a small part of the total biological hazard, and unfortunately most researchers fail to address this point.
It is the broadcast towers that are the true hazard, and NOT the hand held device. Ms. Davis makes some good points in her presentation, yet fails to define the overall impact of multiple tower broadcast exposures, and their cumulative effects on environmental and biological systems. Sorry, but I have issues with the incompetent notion that people can continue to use these systems at all.
The focus must shift to environmental impacts, as we are collapsing many entire biosystems on the planet. It will be rather inconvenient or inappropriate to talk on these stupid and unnecessary devices, when everything around us has been reduced to dust…
Thanks again for all you’re doing. Paul Von

Great info as usual Lloyd! Right now I need the phone but when I get settled, I’ll use a landline when needed.
I also want to thank you for your good input into cordless phones. I had just bought a 2 handset 6.0 when
your newsletter came discussing them! I quickly packed it back up and returned it to the store. Some strange things happened while I used them one day. I’ll tell your readers later! My ? is: What about laptop computers. With gratitude, Barbara

  • Lloyd said,

    Hi Barbara
In terms of EMFs the difference between a laptop and a desktop is that laptops have all their electrical components (which are the source of EMF emissions) directly underneath the keyboard. So you need to create distance between this EMF source and your body, see

    Hi Lloyd:

I am a cancer survivor and for the last couple of years I’ve been researching how EMF’s from cell phones,
computers, t.v.’s and microwaves can harm us. I am
especially concern about the effects Hybrids and electric cars might have on our health. I think we are
going to find 5 or 10 years from now how dangerous these
vehicles are to our health. What do you think?

    Best regards’

  • Lloyd said,

    Hi Aurelio
Most modern cars emit a dangerously high concoction of EMFs – not just hybrids and electric cars. (For my tips on minimizing car EMF exposure, see
So many seemingly harmless devices and appliances are actually causing us significant harm…the information is out there about the dangers, in books like Devra Davis wrote, my website, other websites…but most people are not interested in these dangers…until often until its too late. I wish you well with your recovery.
