Smart Meters, Electromagnetic Radiation, Money and Your Health

Having a “smart” meter installed on your property is, well, not smart at all.

Here is a presentation by engineer Rob States – this is absolutely essential information – you thought cell phone radiation was bad…

What Smart Meters Really Do

According to Rob States, and according to a lot of other people (Dr Goldsworthy talks about infringement of privacy with smart meters) smart meters are not just communicating with the power company, these meters are also sending signals to any other smart meters in the vicinity and nearby cell phone towers as well.

Many smart meters are sending this information almost continuously, not at certain limited times during the day. The result of this is that radio frequency microwave radiation is being radiated through houses and people, as the communication goes from meter to meter.

The health concerns regarding electromagnetic radiation are numerous. Smart meters use the same technology as cell phones. Consequently the health ramifications are the same, namely:

$ The non-ionizing radiation given off by smart meters breaks the DNA molecules in the nuclei of cells. All the cells that are formed by this original cell by cell division will have this altered DNA in their nuclear material. Broken and altered DNA can lead to cancer and other illnesses.

$ Every day, the body manufactures about 3,000 miles of DNA. Twenty billion new cells are formed every day as well. The lower range frequencies emitted by smart meters can disrupt not only the DNA, but also can disrupt the bonds necessary for protein synthesis. Every time a disruption of the DNA occurs, there is an increased chance of creating an error, sometimes a serious error, in DNA transcription, or to put it more plainly cancer.

$ It has been estimated that 3% of the population is extremely sensitive to microwave radiation (like me), and will experience fatigue, headaches, and sleep disturbances etc when exposed to the radiation from any microwave emitting devices. Tests done with those who are sensitive have revealed that they will experience an acceleration of heart rate, from 68 to 122, when using a cell phone. Their heartbeat will also become irregular. Besides these very sensitive people, about 35% of the population is moderately sensitive to microwave radiation.

The possible health problems of these people are being ignored and their concerns trivialized.

Do Smart Meters Really Save Electricity?

Smart meters are supposed to switch power use from high demand times during the day to lower demand times at night. This has been presented as a way to save the consumer money. The amount saved according to Rob’s calculations is a paltry $40 a year, so perhaps there is another reason for the installation of smart meters?

Rob States argues that Smart meters are responsible for a zero reduction in power usage, they simply shift the power from one time to another, the amount of power used remains the same. He points out that if PG&E were really interested in saving electric power, the company would use super-conducting high tension lines. The use of these lines would result in a 30% increase in efficiency with a significant saving in power generation and fuel.

Smart Meters : Money Over People?

Rob States argues that even though smart meters are being touted as an energy and money saving measure, they are actually being installed to benefit large corporations. Nothing has been done to ameliorate the risks associated with microwave radiation, PG&E is simply installing them without regard to the concerns of its customers.

Could it be that the real reason for smart meters is to keep track of energy use to make it easier for corporations to target customers? I think so. Smart appliances are going to be required for use in California in the not-too-distant future, and these will tell the power company and the commercial interests exactly what appliances are being used, when they are being used, and how much they are being used. Every personal use of an appliance will be monitored for the benefit of others. Even now, smart meters can give a fairly good report of what is being used just by the amount of power being used at a specific time. This is obviously an invasion of privacy, which is guaranteed by the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution, but profits evidently mean more than personal privacy and dignity.

The data collected by smart meters can be sold to anyone with the necessary funds. The highest bidder will be enabled to keep track of a household’s internal activities. Laws have been passed to allow corporations to install cell towers without any discussion from those who will be living near them – local input is totally disregarded and ignored.

Smart meters are already in use in countless states and counties throughout the US. The same problems exist elsewhere and is sometimes worse in other countries. In the UK, for instance, smart meters are a potentially bigger health threat because as Dr Goldsworthy points out “From the health angle, it should be noted that American residential meters are normally placed outside the house, whereas in the UK they are most commonly under the stairs; i.e. in the centre of the house. This means that more people will be affected in the UK and their wireless transmissions will have to be more powerful to get through the intervening walls.”

Interestingly in the US, power companies and other microwave providers have been granted immunity from future lawsuits that might arise over health and safety problems, mmm?

* Rob States has three master’s degrees in various disciplines of engineering. Through formal education and private research he has developed a high degree of microwave radiation and power generation expertise. He lives in California, and the power company he talks about in the video presentation below is PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric).

I am a resident of a small town Logan lake in B.C. Canada. I recieved a letter from B.C. Hydro in November 2011 stating that they will be calling me to set up an appointment to install a “smart” meter. I was under the impression that I would have to be home when they came as the letter stated they may have to enter the home. When I was away between Dec. 19 & Jan. 2 they came & installed the meter against my wishes. So I emailed them to tell them I did not want this “smart” meter but was told I have no choice but to keep it. I was told I could have it moved to elsewhere on the property at my expense. I have experienced sleep disturbances & waking with headaches & think it is related to the meter which is on the wall just outside the bedroom. I am now sleeping on my couch on the other end of the house in fear that this is affecting my health & to see if this helps with the headaches. Just wonder if you have heard more of this happening & was hoping there was something I can do. I am looking into the cost of having the meter moved. Thankyou. Sincerely Gerda Shymkowich

    Hi Gerda
I know that this is happening to a lot of people, unfortunately. I outline in this article the practical steps you can take, shielding and other solutions: https://electricsense.com/2431/smart-meter-shielding-tips/

Do you have a reference for this claim? link?

  • Lloyd said,

This article is an abridged version of the video, all the information to support it is in the video.

  • Stephen said,

Here are two links to articles showing they can and are sued.

    http://www.pgecurrents.com/2011/04/18/smartmeter%E2%84%A2-updates-lawsuit-dismissed-final-ccst-report-issued/

    http://ppjg.me/2012/01/14/smart-meters-pge-blinks-after-lawsuit-is-filed/

Interestingly in the latter article the issue of opt-outs is questioned as a CYA against lawsuits.

I think it is dangerous to spread a notion concerning lawsuits which is false, one CAN sue. The utilities and suppliers obviously want people to think otherwise.

I live in an apartment building. There are 4 Smart meters
on the outside of my apartment next to my Living & bedroom.
One of the meters shows MY usage. The other 3 belong to the other tenants, But They Are ALL up against MY Side of the building. My question is, Am I getting ALL of this
radiation in MY apartment? I have heard that they emit 100 time more than a cell phone ,so am I getting 400 times?
I am beginning to have health problems that I have never had before.

  • Lloyd said,

Smart meters emit radio frequency radiation. RF radiation travels through walls. So yes you are being exposed. Your level of exposure will depend on the strength of the signal (power density). Most smart meters are only as powerful as a cell phone, so its more like 4 cell phones you are being exposed to, which is still not good…

HELP! My ears ring constantly, I can’t concentrate, I have almost constant headaches, my heart beat rapidly and keeps me awake, insomnia.
I began to wonder what the heck was happening to me.

I moved here 6-9 months ago, and became unemployed in Jan, and spending a lot more time at home, since I have no money to go anywhere, and it’s gotten progressively worse until tonight, I finally got up and did a little reading online about Smart Meters, and well golly, seems I have the whole list of problems people have identified from the exposure to the RF these things put out.

Then tonight I noticed the SIXTEEN smart meters right on the other side of my bedroom wall just feet from my head.
After seeing some things on the news, and finally tonight, doing a little reading online, it seems my problems are very possibly directly related to the meters outside my bedroom window.

PGE will gladly let the individual homeowner opt out, and may try to debate the saftey of ONE meter at a residence, but SIXTEEN IN A ROW? Right on the other side of the bedroom wall?
It CANNOT be within the legal guidleline.
    What do I do?

There are 2 options; you can shield or you can get the smart meter removed, this article explains both of these aspects: https://electricsense.com/2431/smart-meter-shielding-tips/

I just picked up an Acoustimeter to measure Smart Meter RF. As we were driving home from our office we left it on and noticed a pattern – a 7 second long pulse @ .70 V/m and sometimes .50 V/m peak every 20 seconds or so. It was all the way along a main street about 15 miles long. It was alarming. I stopped along the way and there were smart meter installations along the way. It is a somewhat rural area – the regularity was astounding having nothing to do with location in front of a house or not. Could this be attributed to something other than Smart Meter communication/ pulsing? We can rule out something in the car because as soon as we pulled into our drive and drove 1 mile in from the street to our cabin we dropped to no readings at all. Thank you.
