Smart meters give off electromagnetic radiation (EMFs).
EMFs can be highly detrimental to your health. Period.
I know this is true. David Carpenter also knows this is true.
I know Smart meters are dangerous.
David Carpenter, however is an MD (a medical doctor) and director of the Institute for Health and Environment at the University of Albany.
In this interview he makes three important points in the Smart meter radiation debate:
- the utility companies are saying smart meters are perfectly safe, but the question we should be asking is what evidence is there that smart meters are safe?
- on the contrary, the evidence already exists that exposure to radio frequency radiation (as given off by smart meters ) is detrimental to our health
- whether or not you have a smart meter installed on your home should be your choice and nobody else's
Here is the video:
Transcript“I’m David Carpenter. I am a public health physician. I graduated from Harvard Medical School and I worked for the New York State Department of Public Health for 18 years. During that period of time, I was responsible for administering a program on electromagnetic fields. I subsequently became the Dean of School of Public Health. Presently, I’m a faculty member in the School of Public Health and the director of the Institute for Health and Environment at the University of Albany.
Smart Meter Radiation
Interviewer: Thank you, and Central Main Power says there is no reason to be concerned about smart meters, there are no health effects, and everyone who is worried about health effects of RF from smart meters or from the mesh network really has nothing to be concerned about. What do you say to that? I say that's absolutely false. The question to ask then is; what is the evidence that smart meters are safe and have no adverse health effects? The answer to that question is that there is no such evidence. In fact, while no one has actually done human health studies in relation to people living in homes with smart meters, we have evidence from a whole variety of other sources of radio frequency exposure that demonstrated, convincingly and consistently, that exposure to radio frequency radiation at elevated levels for long period of time: increases the risks of cancer, increases the damage to the nervous system, causes electro-sensitivity, has adverse reproductive effects and a variety of other affects on different organs systems. So there is no reason, no justification, for the statement that smart meters have no adverse health effects.
Smart Meter Radiation Exposure A Matter of Individual Choice
It should be up to each individual to identify whether or not they want to be continuously exposed, 24/7, to elevated levels of radio frequency radiation. The smart meter is for the benefit of the utility. It saves them money because they don’t have to then have people going out reading the meters. It’s at the expense of the consumer who has to live in the house that has this constant exposure. An informed person should demand that they be allowed to keep their analog meter.”
I am clear about the dangers of Smart meter radiation, David Carpenter is clear, are you clear on this issue?

Hi Lloyd,
Thanks for all the educating you’re doing – great website.
What’s your take on this – I have 9 smart meters about 10 ft away from my bedroom, on other side of a small laundry room. I am symptomatic – static-like brain surges, chronic ear ringing, insomnia at nite, hair loss, mood changes; I sleep in other room -now 30+ ft away – since realizing the smart meter situation. A friend is setting me up with grounding solutions. Personally i dont think that will be enough. I ‘m buying a trifield meter to actually measure output, then I go to the Homeowners assn and pitch to get these SMs out of the complex. 9 other condo units have same set-up as mine. If I can’t get results in 2-4 months, I will move..tho in Southern Calif. is challenging to find a place where SMs are not an issue. So I want to take this on, to see if I can help change the situation. Any advice for me? Do you think grounding alone is enough? And what monitor screen protection do you recommend? Thanks again, R

Renee,
It might not be the advice you want to hear, but with the symptoms you already have, I would be looking to move out, the sooner the better (temporarily at least until you can get the smart meters removed). Grounding has helped me a lot, but with the scenario you are describing it will be a bit like trying to put out a house fire with a bucket of water.
A cynic might say “there is no proof it’s the smart meters”, right, but there is no proof there isn’t, listen to your intuition on this one, I guess you already know they are the problem.
If it’s the Trifield 100XE you are wanting to buy you are going to find it difficult to get any meaningful RF radiation readings. You need to buy (or rent) a dedicated RF meter, there are lots on the market, the best value one I have found is the Cornet ed85ex (I wrote a review on it).
Prepare yourself for an uphill battle trying to convince people of the dangers of SMs, this is not a fight you want to be in on your own. Go and knock on your neighbors doors, you can bet there are other people that are being affected. Try and get a protest movement going, the people at stopsmartmeters.org are active in Southern California, I’m sure they will be able to give you some support.
As for screen monitor protection, you really need to look at the big picture, look at all the sources of EMFs in your environment, this article might help you https://electricsense.com/2593/emfs-in-your-home-%E2%80%93-my-protection-tips/
Best of luck.

Lloyd, you’re right – not what I wanted to hear…but I get it. I need to act quickly. I am both looking to move and also have written a flyer for my neighbors to increase awareness and hopefully some action. There are 9 other units in my exact situation with the 9 meters adjacent. Already the HOA has deferred me to SDG&E.
I checked out the Cornet you reviewed…i would prefer a meter that gives audible pulses as I think it drives a point home – you know of one? I see this HFE35C on youtube but they are quite costly at 763 euros.
Thanks again for the great work you do.

I haven’t tested the HFE35C but to my mind it’s a lot of money for a meter that only measures up to 3.3Ghz – there are more and more wireless devices operating in the 5-6 Ghz range. The Acoustimeter costs about half that and measures up to 8Ghz.

I live in Southern California. They switched me to a smart meter without my knowledge or consent. I have begun turning off my electricity at the box everyday in an attempt to protect my cats from EMFs. Does this lessen the smart meter radiation at all? I could also start doing this when I sleep. Is it helpful or am I deluding myself? Thank you.
Lloyd said,
If you are turning off your power in your home obviously the smart meter is still working so it won’t change anything there, but it will eliminate the EMFs in your wiring and thereby reduce your overall EMF exposure. So yes it is a “smart” move (pardon me for the pun), as is doing it at night.
Kathleen said,
Thank you very much, Lloyd! That makes sense. I’ll start switching the box off during the day when I am at work and during sleep hours.

Hi Lloyd, I’m live on a small farm in NH. A smart meter was installed on my barn right outside a pregant goat’s pen. Will this affect her babies and the milk that we drink. Also, we had one installed on our home that has 2 five year old children. This happened while I was away and without my permission. I am concerned.

Hi Kathy
I would be looking to have the smart meter removed if it is near your or your children’s bedrooms, for tips see https://electricsense.com/2431/smart-meter-shielding-tips/ .
Studies show that RF radiation (the type that smart meters emit) is particularly detrimental to children and the foetus. There is a possibility that EMF exposure could impede your goat’s reproductive cycle.

Hi Lloyd, Thanks so much for your important information. I called our electric co and was told removiing the smart meters was not an option in NH. I’m also concerned about the goat milk that we will be drinking after our goat delivers. Does the EMF exposure go into goat’s milk?
