My +20 year journey as an EMF sensitive
The day it all started, some 20 years ago, I raced to retrieve my cell phone from the breast pocket of my jacket, pressed the talk button and pushed it next to my ear.
And … bam… in no time at all I was feeling light-headed and dizzy. This unpleasant sensation quickly turned into a sharp pain.
And there was no mistake… my cell phone was the culprit!
Before long the pain from a brief conversation was so intense I had to stop using my cell phone. Within a few days other previously innocuous electrical devices started to have the same effect on me.
Day long blinding headaches became the norm. These weren’t normal headaches…. it felt as though my head was in a vise.
I was in a state of constant, massive fatigue and I began to develop multiple inexplicable symptoms, such as:
- A ‘hot head‘ when using my cell phone
- Prickly skin around computers and other electrical devices
- A metallic taste in my mouth
- Muscle cramps, particularly in my feet and legs, several times a day
- Feelings of hopelessness and despair
- Inexplicable stomach pains and digestive problems
Public places soon became a test of endurance. Buses, trains, planes and other forms of public transport were impossible.
I found myself prisoner in my own home and every day it got worse
It was as if my body was trying to tell me something… but what?
I was desperate to find a way out of my predicament. But in 2002 information was scarce about EMFs and health.
My doctor could find nothing wrong with me. He said it was stress, that I should take a holiday and it would go away. It didn’t go away it just got worse.
On the advice of my doctor I went for scans, tests and saw a long list of specialists, gastroenterologist, psychologists, physiotherapists….they all drew a blank. One neurologist I went to see, after explaining everything I was going through and laying myself bare, promptly dismissed me, falling just short of calling me a ‘barefaced liar’!
As far as the doctors were concerned my illness did not exist and yet all the time my condition was deteriorating. It seemed as though there was no way out….
For two whole years I lived in a state of doubt, fear and denial. I tried to carry on with a normal life. I tried to pretend that the symptoms were ‘all in my head’.
But the more I pretended the more my symptoms got worse.
Then one day, whilst reading my newspaper, I read about the boss of one of the UKs biggest food groups who could not use cell phones or a telephone because of the pain it caused him. He couldn’t use a computer, he dictated his correspondence to his secretary and he couldn’t ride in a modern car, or an electrified train or take long distance flights.
I felt a huge sense of relief, no longer was I alone
I went on to discover that there were other people reacting to EMFs just like me. I also discovered that what I was experiencing had a name; “electrical hyper sensitivity” or electrical sensitivity (ES).
But giving my symptoms a name did not make my suffering go away. My symptoms persisted and I continued to get progressively worse.
I read everything I could on the subject. Every book, article and research paper. Anything which might help me bring an end to my suffering.
More importantly, I began to take action. I tried everything and anything, every EMF chip, diode, pendant, harmonizer and neutralizer I could find. If I could afford it – I bought it. And sometimes even when I couldn’t really afford it I still bought it.
I wasted over $25,000 on solutions that didn't work
It seemed like nothing worked. Everything I was reading about electrical sensitivity talked about the importance of reducing EMF exposure.
So I bought an EMF meter and started experimenting. There I made my first revelation. I’d been feeling head-achy and heavily fatigued when I sat down to eat at the kitchen table. Now my EMF meter told me why. Just the other side of the wall from where I sat in the kitchen was my cordless phone base, emitting EMFs that maxed out my EMF meter, in the kitchen!
And so I went down the route of EMF protection and avoidance. I consulted EMF experts and started making changes in my home and work environment. I soon realized the EMF meter I’d bought had severe limitations so I bought another meter, then another and another. I eliminated EMF hotspots as I went along and what I couldn’t eliminate I shielded.
Each time I added another layer of EMF protection I felt a glimmer of hope as my symptoms subsided. But the respite was always short lived because each time my symptoms came back. Sometimes with a vengeance.
I consulted alternative health experts from all over the world, kinesiologists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, naturopaths, nutritionists and healers of all kinds.
