How To Measure Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation In Your Home

Posted by Lloyd Burrell on November 21, 2010 under EMFs in your home | 48 Comments to Read

What I call ‘electricsense’ is not just about cell phones, or smart meters, or cell towers, or WiFi.

It’s about a new paradigm. A new way of life. About living a healthy life in this electromagnetic world.

Of all the different forms of electromagnetic pollution, radio frequency radiation is probably the most insidious.

What Is Radio Frequency RF Radiation?

Radio frequency or RF radiation, otherwise known as wireless or microwave radiation is electromagnetic radiation in the frequency range 3 kHz to 300 GHz on the electromagnetic spectrum. It’s in the non-ionizing band of the spectrum. Non-ionizing just means there isn’t enough energy to break chemical bonds between molecules. Unlike ultraviolet light, gamma rays and X-rays which are in the ionizing part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

For decades we have been lead to believe by our governments and many institutions that are supposed to protect us that there is some kind of magical cut-off point between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, that ionizing radiation is dangerous but that non-ionizing radiation is perfectly harmless.

WRONG. Non-ionizing radiation is potentially very harmful. Some scientists even believe it to be more harmful than ionizing radiation due to the insidious way it impacts our life. Of course there are studies to back up these concerns – referenced below.

Where Is RF Radiation?

It’s out in the street, in public transport, in our work places, and it’s even in our homes. It’s use is growing at an alarming rate.

Typically the following telecommunication devices make use of RF radiation; cell phones, cell phone towers, microwave ovens, smart meters, WiFi, Bluetooth, Wimax, wireless baby monitors, cordless phones, radar, wireless baby monitors, wireless burglar alarms etc.

Even devices like electric ovens, dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerators are being equipped with ‘smart’ technology which emits radio frequency radiation.

How To Interpret This Information

As you can see from the above table, the worst offender, by far, is the cell phone held next to the head. The least harmful is a WiFi router at 5 meters.

This comparison is a little oversimplified because it doesn’t take into account the nature of the radiation i.e. cell phones for instance emit pulsed radiation. It is the nature of the pulsing that is thought to be particularly dangerous.

To put these readings in perspective, the level of radio frequency radiation found in nature is below 0.00002 V/m.  That’s to say about 10, 000 less than a WiFi router at 5 meters.

Why Would you Want To Measure RF Radiation?

Quite simply because thousands of independent studies link these exposures to adverse biological effects and a long list of serious diseases including cancer. If you want to read more about these studies I suggest you consult the BioInitiative Report.

Which leads to the question, ‘aren’t there regulations that protect us?’ There are.

There are many different RF safety standards and regulations used throughout the world.

Here are the four major exposure standards in the World:

The problem is these guidelines and standards do very little to protect us. They are ridiculously lenient.

In some cases they are 10,000 (yes, ten thousand) times too lenient.

Hundreds of international scientists are calling for these guidelines and standards to be revised – see the UN appeal.

I talk more about this here.

RF Radiation Is Everywhere – There Is Nothing You can Do About It?

Unnatural levels of RF radiation is practically everywhere on the planet now. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing you can do about it.

A lot of people think that because for instance their neighbor has a got a wireless modem that there’s no point in getting rid of their own wireless modem. WRONG.

RF radiation respects the inverse square law. Which  means the strength of an electromagnetic field is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the source. Put simply this means that radiation exposures diminish very quickly the further you get away from the device emitting the radiation.

For instance, if you replace your WiFi router with a wired version, so the nearest WiFi is now your neighbors WiFi which is 100 feet away from your office desk instead of 1 foot away. Well this equates to a 10,000 fold reduction in exposure (100 x 100) because you are 100 times further away from the source.

So there are lot’s of ways you can reduce your exposure to this form of EMF.

See RF Radiation In Action

In this short video you will see how:

  • I measure radio frequency radiation
  • radio frequency radiation exists in a home even when there are no cell phones, cordless phones or WiFi
  • I explain what the ramifications are of living in an environment that is bathed in electromagnetic radiation 24 hours a day 7 days a week

You can get an EMF consultant in to do some testing in your home to establish the level of your exposures, but EMF meters are now so cheap and easy to use that you may want to do the testing yourself. The advantage of buying your own EMF meter is that you can use it at home, at work with friends and family and you can use it over and over again.

When I first bought my meter even I was surprised by some of the readings it was giving me. Because I was very electrosensitive at the time I could feel the electrosmog, I didn’t need the EMF meter to alert me of hotspots. Most people do not have this “advantage”, they are exposing themselves and their family because of their ignorance. Take my word for it, the sooner you get wise on the issue of RF radiation the better…..

I assume femtocells are very bad from an EMF point of view.
What is your view and have you measured any?
    Thanks

  • Lloyd said,

    Hi Pete
Femtocells are operate like a miniature cell tower. People typically use them to get round the problem of dropped calls on their cell phone. On the one hand the device itself emits and receives RF radiation but on the other it does mean your cell phone does not have to work as hard. I’ve never tested one of these but if you do have one of these devices in your home make sure its not installed near any bedrooms (sorry for my delayed response).

Hi Lloyd. I found your info to be very useful. I’m from Australia and we recently had mandatory smart metres installed by the government. We have been told that these metres omit levels of radiators 24/7 and this is of concern to me as I have 2 young children. Is there any way to shield this radiation away from my house? Your advise is appreciated.

  • Lloyd said,

    Hi Robyn
Shielding is possible, but to do it effectively you have to have the right materials and you have to be thorough, see https://www.electricsense.com/2431/smart-meter-shielding-tips/

    Hi Lloyd,
My husband is in the process of being fitted with hearing aids and I am concerned about the Wifi aspect to it. I’ve been told by the audiologist not to worry because ‘the manufacturers would never design hearing aids that damage the patients’ but I am worried!! There is a gizmo that connects to the cell phone directly so that the call comes through the hearing aids to assist in the hearing of the call. Do you have any suggestions please – I’m worried about tumors, headaches etc.
    Many thanks
    Esme.

  • Lloyd Burrell said,

    Hi Esme
Sounds like the hearing aids have a Bluetooth connection, I’m sure your audiologist means well but this would mean increased RF radiation exposure (see, https://www.electricsense.com/1010/bluetooth-what-you-will-learn-nowhere-else-%E2%80%93-is-it-really-dangerous/). Ask the audiologist if this option can be deactivated on the hearing aids and have your husband use his phone without this to see if he can do without it.

I have a theory why I may not be sleeping so well. I moved in with my parents about two weeks and since then I just haven’t been waking up rested. Basically I feel “charged” and not in a good sense. This morning I discovered the cord coming from the main power line and which connects to my house does so right outside my bedroom window, in fact close to where my head lies when I sleep. I live in the Cleveland area. Is there anyway I can have this tested? Is there any company that would come over and do measurements? What would I have to type into the internet? “Electromagnetic measuring company”? “Electrosmog”? I’m at a loss, but I know there are people who do this. Also is there anything I could buy to disrupt the electromagnetic waves and/or prevent them from entering my bedroom? Such as a special cloth or board or other type of shield? Thank you for your help.

  • Lloyd Burrell said,

There are companies which specialize in EMF consulting, see https://www.electricsense.com/3125/emf-consultants-list/ if you can’t find one in your area here, in Google do a search for ‘EMF consultant Cleveland’. If you go this route let me know how you get on.

The other option is to measure yourself with an EMF meter, the price will be about the same, the advantage is you can use the meter for other things and you can keep monitoring your EMFs – levels change over time.

The first thing is to identify the nature of the EMFs that are causing the problem (magnetic fields, electric fields, RF radiiation…) and then you can shield as needed – come back to me on this if you need to.
