How To Detect WiFi Radiation Without An RF Meter

Posted by Lloyd Burrell on June 20, 2012 under Computer radiation, Electrosmog, Protection tips | 24 Comments to Read

I know a lot of people are still sitting on the fence about WiFi. They’ve read my articles, they know what the studies say about RF radiation. They know WiFi is no good for them.

But they carry on using it.

For a whole load of reasons. The main one is probably convenience. Personally WiFi offers me nothing. The connection is not as good and I am not interested in surfing the Internet whilst I am wandering round the house or whilst I’m lying in bed……

Call me old fashioned but my PC stays firmly on the office desk. Apart from the occasions when I am away for a few days. And even then, I’d rather live without Internet if I can.

But if you are one of those people who prefer to keep using WiFi then this one’s for you.

It’s some software which you can install on your laptop which gives you a detailed map of your Wi-Fi coverage. It will actually show you the information on a floor plan (that you have to supply first). You just download the software, upload your floor plan and then walk round your home or office to survey signal strength.

Of course the people who designed this software designed it with the idea that people would be able to determine where the strongest signal was. It’s good for that too.

But for us EMF conscious types it can be better used to reduce your WiFi radiation exposure.

For instance, if you live in an apartment you may not even have WiFi. But you know that your neighbor does because when you switch your laptop on it tells you there is another signal. This software can tell you where the WiFi hotspots are. If your bed is situated on one of them then you know you need to either talk your neighbors into moving their router or move your bed.

If you are in a shared office and you don’t need the Wifi then this software can tell you where to situate your desk so you are the least exposed to it.

Similarly if you regularly go to an Internet café but you don’t use the WiFi then this software can tell you where it’s best to sit to minimize your exposure.

You may think, why bother with the software? Why not just look at the signal bar information in the WiFi function of your laptop.

You can do this too. But this software condenses all this information by telling you what the combined coverage is for a given location. If the map shows the location in green it means the signal is strong and if it shows it in red it means the signal is weak.

The other great thing about this software is that it’s FREE.

In giving you information as to the WiFi signal strength it is actually giving you information on RF radiation levels. It gives you the choice.

Of course it’s not as good as an RF meter, because it does not measure the RF levels in RF units, it just gives you an indication of signal level. But from an EMF mitigation viewpoint this is still very valuable information.

I don’t have WiFi so I have not been able to test this software, but the reviews I have read on it are very good.

Thanks Lloyd! Glad you are putting the word out there.

I have a wiFi free home and office–completed wired without any wireless devices. My home and offices have also been shielded completely with the Y-shield products. My roof isn’t perfectly shielded, but we have treated the attic with other shielding materials. All the work was retro-fitted and not new construction. For the first time in almost a decade, we can sleep, dream, and rest deeply every night without sleep medication or supplements. People are unaware of the effects of EMR on sleep cycles, focus, memory, headaches, etc.

What I find outrageous, is that there is no legislation on how close to homes and building the cell-mast networks can place their EMR masts! I have read it is unhealthy to work or live within close range to these cell masts, and yet, here in the USA, there are mast on apartment buildings, restaurants and commercial buildings. They are everywhere! The effects to exposure are additive! Yet, day-in-and-day-out people are unconsciously living and working 24 hours per day in high radiation zones. It is time people woke up, spoke up, and created a ground swell of consciousness! When will we all speak back to Big Telcom? Tell them “‘No! We will not live in your mind-and-body altering world of EMR!

Our health ought to come before our access to wiFi, Blue Tooth, and the closest cell tower!

    Hi Lori
The effects of EMFs on human health are far reaching and horrific. The unremitting unregulated profusion of these technologies is outrageous. It is time people woke up and spoke up. I realized a long time ago I couldn’t help people who didn’t want to be helped. And rather than get caught up in feeling outraged that it was better to devote my energy to helping those that did want to be helped.

i write to samsung that all this resonation
could harm people, and they didnt reply since.
I know there are Jammers but ,how to block them, not
avoiding??. I recently saw about light resonation
If we want to transmit intel to another person
what frequency to use to not harm others???

  • Lloyd said,

Signal jammers work by overpowering the device in question, cell phone, wifi etc by transmitting a countering signal on the same frequency. They add to EMF radiation. What frequency should be used to not harm others? – this is where the research should have been done before cell phones were put on the market.

  • Lori said,

    Hi Lloyd,

Yes, I see your point! I do feel outraged, more in the lack of awareness combined with the lightening speed that new networks, smart grids over cells mast grids polluting with increased folds of electro magnetic radiation.

I too, do my best to inform those who want to know how to be helped. Sorry for the rant…..there are so few places to express my concerns where they are met with awareness and respect.

Feel free to rant whenever you want to Lori :)

    Hi Lloyd –
You have helped me out so much with your information – THANK YOU so much! I have had the “smart” water meter removed from house but it is on the house transmitting data ev 14 mins using frequency hopping, spread-spectrum technology, I was told.(Below FCC standards)
I have removed wiFi completely. Hey I don’t even have tv yet – need to get antenna for the house :) No microwave. No cordless phone. Three dogs for a burglar alarm. One computer on at a time that is wired!! I think we are good to go. Except for those 200 ft? high wire electric poles two blocks away…can’t do anything about them, yet. But want to move :)
    Thanks again

Last year Vodafone constructed a cell tower across the street from our house in direct line with our bedroom.
I am now concerned and am thinking of buying an EMF meter that i can use to check the radiation levels from the cell phone tower and our everyday appliances at home.
Can you please recomend 2-3 suitable meters that are available on the market. thank you.

can you recommend site(s) for family members who reject EMF information?

  • Lloyd said,

Everything is here, but some people, most people, are just not interested in learning about the EMF issue. If they are not interested there’s not much you can do…the more you push the issue, the more they resist. I have given up trying to convince anyone about these dangers. If these non-believers are family , you have just got to hope that something comes on to their “radar” which changes their mind. Given time it will…

Can you direct me to where I can buy Y shield products?

Dangers as in the form of vague health related issues! well, I BELIEVE–I BELIEVE!!! The hissing noises have calmed. The nose bleeds are over. Even the dogs seem to have relaxed since getting rid of the wifi. Its all good.

Now, is there any way to get lead paint? Wouldn’t THAT cut down on any electrical intrusion? Good ole LEAD? I till take my chances but we don’t have ANY paint chip eaters, here. I don’t believe that as a real danger either.
I believe the people that claim SOMETHING had to be done about the use of lead paint – health dangers it is – so that homes/businesses/etc can be looked into and listened to, since ww2. Is this silly?

Can’t figure why they stopped lead in gasoline, tho. If there is NO REAL threat – babies have been chewing on chinese painted with lead toys for decades now – why?

    Just a thought.

  • Lloyd said,

I have not done a great deal of research into the dangers of lead, but from what I have seen the studies are very convincing. Protecting yourself from the dangers of EMFs by exposing yourself to the dangers of lead poisoning doesn’t make any sense. Lead free EMF shielding paints already exist as do cheaper solutions with aluminum foil, see

  • Josie said,

I read that aluminum screening (the kind you use for windows) reduces EMF exposure. In your opinion would aluminum screening if placed around the wireless router in the house reduce the EMF reading and would that be a good way to shield a room and the house from some of the dangers of using a wireless router?

  • Lloyd said,

Aluminum screening could be effective in shielding your router….without measuring with an RF meter you wouldn’t know if the shielding was effective….better to buy the meter first rather than waste time and money on shielding which doesnt work.

One change to my ES over the past year, I can now hear the wifi RF signal, it’s like a low vibration on my ear drum and is amplified if I have been exposed that day or days prior, I found out a wee while back as I started to hear a low drone at night sounding like machinary or heavy plant moving around a distance away, I hear it when I enter my drive as next door have the wifi constantly on. I can cover my ears and the sound/vibration dissapears.

I have had trouble in my office since I moved in with an increase in EHS symptoms. (I developed EHS several years ago using a Motorola cell phone) I turned off most of my breakers which lowered the amount of EMF quite a bit–but I still get some from below me–the first floor. I also have filters for DE. I have the second floor office in a three story building. The reading where I sit is 1 MG on the floor (which I know is not much) with an AC Milligauss Meter Model UHS2 but 3-4 V from a AC Volt Meter that measures what is in the body at the same spot. (Now I ground myself so the body volt level should not be an issue.) I do not pick up any radiation from cell phone towers or WIFI–@ 9 mV (very low) with the 3 axis RF Meter covering 50 Mhz to 3.5 GHz. However I know there are several wifi routers in the area because my computer picks up at least 8 different devices, some stronger than others. There is a computer repair next door, on the other side of my wall.

I wonder if there could be another source of EMFs that my meters are not picking up or if the 1 MG is enough to cause my symptoms–ear ringing, decreased memory, and other cognitive issues. I feel that the issue is with electricity because when the power in the building is off I feel better and my symptoms improve then get worse again once the power is restored. (We have a lot of storms here.) Also being in the building affects me the same as using a cell phone, which I don’t use any more but on rare occasion–and only on speaker phone. Grounding has helped but has not reduced all symptoms. I basically loose my senses–reduced eye sight, ear ringing, poor memory and numb hands plus aching joints.

    1) Am I missing something in my measurements–would you suggest another type of meter.
    2) Would it be worth trying to shield the office with paint or other products to see if that helps, even though the meter picks up so little. How can the meter pick up so little but the computer pick up so many devices. Perhaps I am as sensitive as the computer — thus more sensitive than the meter. Since the meter is really not picking up anything.
    3) Is 3-4 V in the body a lot for a sensitive person. Curious where this could be coming from. I take care of it with grounding but its source is mysterious.

Any thoughts would be very helpful. I know from my past that I do not have much time left that I can stay in the office–and nowhere really to go and a family to feed.

You are way more sensitive than any EMF meter…more sensitive than even the most expensive EMF measuring equipment that exists…I can’t do justice to your situation in a few lines on this comment form….one piece of advice: subscribe to my free report and newsletters and start following and acting on my advice in there.

i have recently enlisted the help of an EMR consultant to assess our emr exposure in our house. Our journey to a wireless free home has just begun. But at work is a different story – we are moving to a new building, 3 floors and we will have 8x cisco WAPS per floor. That scare me so much. I’ve been told that each wap powers down to allow the other waps to work (which to me, means it will continually pulse). I don’t know if there is anything I can do to protect myself. I have been at this job for 14 years. Unfortunately, I work in IT.

Hola, Lloyd, thank you for all the amazing info on your site.

I have internet because a neighbor shares wifi with me (it is very expensive here in Central America). Usually my computer shows about 4 wifi signals within range: (1) at 78% and (3) between 24% and 40%.

Occasionally my computer may show up to 9 signals reaching my computer, usually (1) at 78%, (7) between 24% and 40%, and (1) at 10%.

From this information, can you tell me whether or not I am being exposed to too much wifi radiation, even if I take your other recommendations such as only using the computer unplugged, and when not using it, keeping it at a distance?

    I appreciate your consideration,

You stated in another response that the emf detection was really based on signal strength rather than rf units. Im curious what kind of relationship can be made between signal strength and emf? Is it possible for a laptop to detect emf or would the internal emf emissions make it impossible to register an external detection? Thank you. Enjoy your articles.
